Olivia / Ian Falconer / Modern Fantasy

Olivia

Author/Illustrator: Ian Falconer
Genre: Modern Fantasy
Grade level: PK-2
Award: Caldecott Honor

Olivia is a spirited pig who has too much energy to deal with. She exhausts her mother by dressing up, singing songs, building sand castles, painting, and dancing. Eventually, Olivia tires out and finally goes to sleep.

This book includes black and white illustrations that are very expressive. Ian Falconer creates a little splash of color by adding in some red to the black and white drawings. These simplistic drawings help to create a fun way to guide the story. This pig being humanized is a great representation of personification. Olivia also received the Caldecott Honor in 2001.

This book is great because it allows readers to have a fun time reading. Its humor will spark the interest of readers. It also has a great representation of personification by the human characteristics of the pig, Olivia.
